Passcomm was appointed to design and manufacture stainless steel LED emergency exit signage for a major UK road tunnel project.
The project required a bespoke version of the standard Emergency Exit “Running Man” sign, designed specifically for the demanding environment of a road tunnel. We worked directly with the end client and principal contractor to develop signage that met the required visual, safety and performance standards, while also fitting within the physical constraints of the tunnel profile.
The result was a robust, slimline LED-based signage solution manufactured from high-quality stainless steel and designed for long-term performance in a challenging roadside environment.
Road tunnels present a demanding environment for illuminated signage. Signs must remain visible and reliable despite exposure to brake dust, vehicle emissions, vibration, moisture and general wear from continuous traffic conditions.
The tunnel profile also created a specific design challenge. The signage needed to be as slim as possible so that it could fit neatly within the available space, without compromising emergency visibility or light dispersion.
This meant the product had to balance several competing requirements: a slim physical profile, strong illumination, even light output, durable materials and compliance with relevant British and EN standards.
A further challenge was avoiding visible LED “spotting”. On slimmer illuminated signs, LEDs can sometimes appear as individual points of light rather than producing an even illuminated face. For emergency signage, clear and consistent visibility is essential, so this had to be engineered out of the design.
We worked closely with the project team through a detailed design consultation process, reviewing the required materials, installation environment, available space and performance requirements.
The team designed and produced a much slimmer stainless steel version of the Emergency Exit “Running Man” sign, suitable for use within the road tunnel environment. Stainless steel was selected for its durability, corrosion resistance and ability to withstand the demanding conditions found in tunnel settings.
To overcome the challenge of LED spotting, we developed an innovative LED panel design that allowed light to spread evenly across the illuminated face of the sign. This enabled the signage to maintain a slim profile while still delivering clear, consistent and highly visible illumination.
Throughout the process, the design was developed with consideration for the relevant British and EN standards, ensuring the finished product met the project’s safety and performance expectations.
The finished signage was successfully manufactured and supplied for installation within the road tunnel project.
A significant number of years later, the signs remain in situ and in excellent working and visual condition. This long-term performance reflects the quality of the materials used, the care taken during the design and manufacturing process, and the suitability of the final product for a harsh tunnel environment.
The success of the project also informed future product development. Since the original roll-out, Passcomm has continued to work on slimmer and more power-efficient signage designs, building on the same principles of durability, visibility and careful engineering.
This project demonstrates Passcomm’s ability to design and manufacture bespoke illuminated signage for safety-critical infrastructure environments.
By working closely with the end client and principal contractor, we developed a stainless steel LED emergency exit sign that met the practical demands of a major UK road tunnel while maintaining clear visibility, long-term durability and a slimline profile.
The continued performance of the signage years after installation provides a strong example of how careful design, high-quality materials and precise manufacturing can deliver lasting value in demanding infrastructure settings.
