Irish Rail project – Trackside Box on Post Cabinets

Project overview

We worked with a major Tier 1 principal contractor to design, assemble and supply PADS approved trackside connectivity cabinets for a major rail infrastructure project in Ireland.

The project required robust trackside telecoms enclosures capable of supporting both legacy copper networks and additional fibre connectivity. Drawing on decades of experience delivering trusted Passcomm solutions for the rail environment, Passcomm adapted an existing trackside cabinet design to meet the specific technical and operational requirements of the project.

The final solution was developed in close collaboration with the principal contractor, ensuring the cabinet layout, connectivity design and product specification aligned with the client’s expectations for trackside deployment.

Challenges

Trackside rail environments place significant demands on telecoms equipment and enclosures. Products must be suitable for outdoor installation, able to withstand vibration and shock, and approved for deployment in safety-critical rail settings.

For this project, the contractor needed a cabinet solution that could support the management of existing copper networks while also enabling additional fibre connectivity. This created a need for a carefully planned internal layout, with the right balance of legacy infrastructure support and future-ready connectivity.

The product also had to meet the client’s specification without introducing unnecessary complexity for installation teams. Reliability, compliance, accessibility and practical installation requirements all needed to be considered from the outset.

Solution

We worked closely with the Tier 1 principal contractor to understand the technical requirements, site expectations and end-client demands for the project.

Rather than starting from a completely new design, Passcomm adapted a previously deployed trackside cabinet solution. This gave the project the benefit of an established, rail-proven product while allowing the internal configuration and layout to be adjusted to suit the specific requirements of the scheme.

Our telecoms specialist team integrated both copper and fibre design factors into the cabinet arrangement, ensuring the enclosure could support the required connectivity infrastructure. The solution was developed in line with the customer’s specification and built around PADS approved products suitable for trackside use.

The cabinets were then assembled, kitted and supplied for roll-out by the principal contractor.

Outcome

The cabinet designs were approved by the client and supplied to the principal contractor for deployment across the project.

By adapting an established trackside product and tailoring it to the project’s copper and fibre connectivity requirements, we helped provide a practical, compliant and installation-ready solution for a demanding rail environment.
